“Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura
ché la diritta via era smarrita.”
(Dante Alighieri, Divina Commedia, Inferno, Canto I)
In the year of its 90° Anniversary OMAS is pleased to dedicate the Great Artist series Limited Edition to the “Father of Italian Language”.
As a matter of fact in 2015 we celebrate the 750th anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri, author of the Divina Commedia, universally considered as the greatest work written in iItalian and one of the greatest masterpieces of the world literature.
The work, written in “volgare fiorentino”, represents an exception in the medieval literary tradition.
Dante, indeed, prefers to the noble latin, used in writing about themes having sacred nature, the common language used in his years in Florence.
Dante himself in “De Vulgari Eloquentia” defines the vernacular as “Hec est nostra vera prima locutio”, that is to say “our true first language”.
OMAS, thanks to the Limited Edition Dante Alighieri, continues a ninety years historical tradition aimed to promote, by means of the creation of its writing instruments, the modern value of handwriting.
The Limited Edition Dante Alighieri, produced in 575 piston filling fountain pens and 175 rollerballs, numbered and limited in silver, and 7 piston filling fountain pens and 5 rollerballs in 18K gold, has been created to celebrate a great poet and it is therefore to the writer that this creation is dedicated, a writer able not only to represent his talent, but also to narrate his time and his history.
This writing instrument reinterprets and gathers the basicness of the writing instruments used in Dante’s times: the quill pen and the inkwell used to write are reinterpreted in the barrel of the pen through an essential and smooth shape, to which the use of cotton resin gives a sensation of naturality and extreme lightness.
In the cap two component of great symbolic value are included: the ring cap and the feather-shaped clip. Both made thanks to the casting process and finished by the hands of our skilled artisans, they represent a clear homage to the “Sommo Poeta”.
It is on the cap ring that the famous quote of the first triplet of the Canto I, Inferno, is engraved in the original medieval text.
The choice of this specific poetic passage is not only a tribute to his most famous work but represents the real meaning of the work itself. This is the beginning of his allegory telling of the journey throughout time. A journey that represents men knowledge of his time, where culture, tradition, religion and myth mix all together in a one only universe.
It is only through this journey that man might understand life deep meaning.
“Great Dante’s modernism is revealed in his humanity and in his interpreting ability of man anxiety and worries towards the mystery of human being” (Italian quote Raffaele Urraro from “Leggere Dante oggi” by Mauro Editore, translated in english by Omas)
Handwriting attempts to pass on to future generations all this, because handwriting means leaving a sign in our history.
The Dante Alighieri Anniversary Limited Edition has been created with the Società Dante Alighieri sponsorship.
